Ramen, BP. I remember my grandfather talking about going to the dentist when he was a kid; he would walk in the dentist's office and see the floor littered with extracted teeth, and he'd be afraid his own teeth would be lying there soon. Every time I'm tempted to complain about modern life, I remember that one.

Bless his heart! Some infections can be devilish-hard to get rid of. When people pine for the "good ol' days" I think about illnesses and infections that we can treat and cure now, that they couldn't in the past. Yay for modern medicine!

If the infection is in his gums they need to clean out his gums with saltwater syringes. My aunt had terrible problems with that wich only stopped once the dentist did this a couple of times. They used to sell those syringes at the pharmacy but stopped because some people couldn't use them correctly. You might still be able to get them where you live.

yikes....and on top of everything, I am sorry you and Iain had trouble finding a doctor to take your insurance....I am finding more and more that it is not just *having* insurance, but having the *right* insurance that make getting treatment easier.

Oooh not nice!
I have just had a toof out because of an abcess too, and had to wait a month in order for the dentist to operate.

Fortunately it was a loss of a filling that caused the abcess, so a friend, who happens to be a nurse, lanced it for me.

I used Clove Oil to ease the pain, dont know if that may help Iain?
(if used be careful, it will burn the tongue and lips!)

And I also used a weak antiseptic disinfectant solution as a mouth wash, one of the worst things I've ever tasted!

I really hope it gets better soon Iain.

I hope Ian will recover soon. That sort of infection is nothing to fool with--a few years ago my mom had an infection in her mouth that didn't respond to the antibiotics she had been prescribed. It got septic very suddenly and she ended up in the hospital on IV antibiotics. Scary stuff! Keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn't get a fever, if he does, call the doctor immediately, and if it's high fever, go to the ER.

That said, he'll be fine. :) Bring on the jello! Instant Breakfast and Gatorade are great for keeping hydrated, and IB is good for filing you up and getting you some vitamins when you can't eat regular food.

Oh, poor Iain! That sounds like a winner infection. Frosties might be the way to go here, especially if he hasn't been able to eat for a while, because they're pretty calorie-dense and will give him lots of energy per spoonful. Plus, you know, yum, unless the cold bothers him.

I'm definitely sending my positive thoughts. I am, however, deliberately blocking those of my oldest cat. A few weeks ago I had an ear infection (it actually had a similar effect - couldn't open my jaw, etc), and my cat's attempt to help? Come up to me where I was lying in massive pain, sniff at the infected ear, and then proceed to headbutt it repeatedly. Argh.

At least it is high in protein and a variation from the JellO!
