Toof Update

Started by Melissa McEwan · 1 month ago

A lot of people have been asking after Iain after he had his toof out on Monday, so I just wanted to say thank you and give a quick update.

Unfortunately, he's had a really difficult recovery; the infection that necessitated the tooth extraction in ... Continue reading »

  • Consider them sent in all manner of ways.
  • Oh, this breaks my heart. I believe tooth pain is the worst pain I have ever known and I wouldn't wish it on an enemy (with a couple exceptions in the WH). I am so very sorry, Iain, and hope you are now wrapped in healing. Hugs.
  • I'm so sorry! If this antibiotic doesn't work PDQ, get to a hospital. Sending good thoughts your way.
  • Oh no!!! Poor guy...I hate tooth pain more than anything, maybe cause I love food so much... :( Bet he can't wait for that first BIG meal! hugs!
  • Ugh! Oh no! When I got an infection from an impacted wisdom tooth when I had some insurance problems (long story), I also had no choice but to wait it out. I couldn't open my mouth for days and I COULDN'T TAKE ADVIL! What I did was make plain gelatin and cool it. Stuffed into the back of my jaw on the offending areas with radiating pain, the cool squishiness was very soothing.

The next thing is very Stuff White People Like, but I've seen studies that show green tea actually enhances the efficacy of antibiotics (I think it even managed to knock out MRSA in one study!).

    Hope he feels better soon.
  • Make sure to be hypervigilant here. Tooth stuff can move to a systemic mode(sepsis) and then you have real problems. Most important is make sure ALL antibiotics are taken as prescribed. Lots of garlic helps too. My family are Scots and I know it isn't #1 on the culinary hit parade of the wee lads and all but it is a boon.
  • Gentle hugs for the two of you!
  • That's a nasty infection. I hope this antibiotic takes care of it.
  • Sending healing dental energy his way--may the new antibiotics be successful!
  • Yikes. That microbe sounds at least mildly antibiotic resistant. If the new stronger stuff doesn't lead to immediate relief (i.e within 24 hours he should notice at least some improvement) go right back. If there's no improvement or things worsen, it's resistant to the new stuff as well, and it's really, really important to get him on something that does deal with.
  • Ooooff! (((((hugs)))))

So sorry; this sounds beyond awful! The stronger antibiotic should kick in soon; I'm sure you're monitoring closely...

Sounds like silly movie/TV time. When I was 13 I had 8 teeth (teef?) out at once (4 tenacious baby teeth and the 4 permanent ones beneath, since I have a tiny mouth and they wouldn't have fit). I watched The Princess Bride enough times to learn every line.

Also, those freezable gel packs for knees etc. could be a real boon...

Thinking of you both; keep us posted!

    ETA: and what quixote said.
  • what quixote said. popsicles may help if he can tolarate the cold. important thing is keep hydrated and take the antibiotics. and if no improvement in 24, take him to an urgent care centerif he cannot get into the office over the weekend.
  • Poor Iain. Toof pain is teh suk. Sending you mentalphotos of kute orange kittehs.

And yes, second Quixote, don't hesitate to get his butt to the hospital if this doesn't start working really fast.
  • Ow. Poor Iain!

I keep a little cauldron on my altar, and I add the names of folk who are in need of healing. Iain's been added.
  • Oh man, poor Iain. That sounds awful. I hope this antibiotic will kick in soon - I second everyone else re: the need for serious vigilance, but I'm sure you already knew that. :)

I hope Iain will feel better soon, and I hope you're taking care of yourself too, Liss. I'll be thinking of you both.
  • get well soon, iain!
  • Only chiming in to emphasize what others have said - if it doesn't get better, act on it. Those infections spread out to the bones and sinus cavities and they're a bitch to kill. And can be serious.

Also, no one will tell you this, but if he's taking Augmentin, then don't let him take it on an empty stomach. Ugly GI symptoms can ensue, and I'm sure he doesn't need THAT right now.

Sure hope he feels better soon!
  • Yikes, that sounds horrible. Hope this new antibiotic kicks it, and that we will shortly be hearing better news from Shakes Manor. Get well soon, Iain!
  • Oh shit.............

Also will do what I can.................
  • Ach, poor Iain!

As everyone else has said, monitor the progress closely! If you do end up having to go back to the hospital, consider taking the ambulance (if your insurance will cover it--ugh, I hate having to say that.) Systemic infections are not to be trifled with, and if it does go systemic, the time you'll save matters. And, from a purely gaming-the-system perspective, riding in on the bus skips you to the front of the triage line once you get to the ER, so you'll be assessed immediately.
  • I'll be on Jell-O duty for the duration, so forgive me if I continue to be not around as much as usual.

And I'd say that's what it comes down to, whether it was one or the other. You are both very lucky....Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
  • SKM is right; the freezable gel packs are a boon, but if you don't have one of those, a plastic bag full of frozen peas works nicely. Rinsing your mouth out with warm salt water helps too, and so does a teabag on the empty socket. (no obscene comments from the peanut gallery, please.)

I hesitate to add another folk remedy, since it doesn't work for everyone, but you might try some oil of cloves, or add some water to ground up cloves, make a paste of it, and spread it on the aching tooth. When my wisdom teeth were infected, I'd put a dried clove on my back tooth, crunch down and viola--instant pain relief. ( Marathon Man was right.)

    Sending healing thoughts your way....
  • WHAT QUIXOTE SAID!!!!! (quixote Today 09:31 PM)
  • Aw geez, poor Iain! I'm sending loads of Get Well Quick JuJu and the kittehz send (very gentle) nose kisses.
  • Poor guy. :( Hope the antibiotic kicks in soon.
  • Yes, loads of I sympathiseitty (dental pain is my personal Rubicon) 'cause me SO just spent some quality time at the torturer's too, I mean the dentist's... it sucks, big fat monkey BALLZ.

I can only hope your Iain is a stalwart fellow (which I'm sure he is) and he has some bitching antibio's, lots of loving juju, some Percosets and a glass of Merlot. That'll put the cozy no-pain sleep on any of us slags...

But much love and propz to Our Esteemed Friend Liss, because we all know dealing with a sickie luver d00d can be totally sucky mc sucktasticson!!!
  • I'm sending you loads of healing energy and prayers (of my type). Let me know if there's anything else I can do, pet.
  • Wishes of a speedy recovery to Mr. Shakes!
  • Healing thoughts and our wishes for a speedy recovery from the roramich / JMonkey household.
  • Oh no! I can totally relate. I had a persistent tooth pain issue which caused radiating pain through my jaw and neck and, eventually, head. The dentist prescribed Vicodin, which did next to nothing for the pain and made me feel like shit. (I have a history of things that are supposed to make me high just doing nothing at all or making me feel like shit.) It ended up being an exposed bit of root due to a shrunken gum, and when the gumline got better the pain went away.

Like the others, I wouldn't wish it on anyone, and I also send my well wishes to Mr. Shakes!
  • He may need more than one antibiotic. The docs need to find out what bacteria are causing the infection in the 1st place. I had a abscess once, aggravated by a root canal since it didn't show up on the x-ray, that was 4 strains of bacteria. After everything was drained, I ended up on double doses of 2 antibiotics, plus IV antibiotics every day for 3 days. Insurance balked at the double doses of the 2 antibiotics til my dentist told them to stop trying to be a doctor and just approve it. It was the most excruciating thing I've ever experienced.

I wish the best of speedy recoveries for Mr. Shakes.
  • Healing wishes and a recipe suggestion: Tofu shakes?

    Soft tofu.
    Apple juice.
a spoonful of berry jam or a few berries if they are available.

    Blend.

At least it is high in protein and a variation from the JellO!
  • (((Iain)))

That sucks something fierce <;_;> may this new medicine work quickly and painlessly!
  • Good luck - don't want to mess around with infections. Best wishes for quick healings.
  • As my dear Scots friend used to say, Puir wee mite.

Tooth pain truly is miserable. I hope the new a/b kicks in yesterday.
  • Oh, that sounds awful. Sending lots of sympathy.
  • Oh, poor Iain! That sounds like a winner infection. Frosties might be the way to go here, especially if he hasn't been able to eat for a while, because they're pretty calorie-dense and will give him lots of energy per spoonful. Plus, you know, yum, unless the cold bothers him.

I'm definitely sending my positive thoughts. I am, however, deliberately blocking those of my oldest cat. A few weeks ago I had an ear infection (it actually had a similar effect - couldn't open my jaw, etc), and my cat's attempt to help? Come up to me where I was lying in massive pain, sniff at the infected ear, and then proceed to headbutt it repeatedly. Argh.
  • A speedy and complete healing to Mr Shakes.
  • Oh, thats awful.

I went through something similar when I had my wisdom teeth out. Infection, antibiotics, spreading infection (to my sinuses no less, forming a less than nifty hole in my jaw), and then more antibiotics for the resistant bugs and special mouth rinse.

Half frozen pudding may also be a nice treat. Take care Iain !
  • I hope Ian will recover soon. That sort of infection is nothing to fool with--a few years ago my mom had an infection in her mouth that didn't respond to the antibiotics she had been prescribed. It got septic very suddenly and she ended up in the hospital on IV antibiotics. Scary stuff! Keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn't get a fever, if he does, call the doctor immediately, and if it's high fever, go to the ER.

That said, he'll be fine. :) Bring on the jello! Instant Breakfast and Gatorade are great for keeping hydrated, and IB is good for filing you up and getting you some vitamins when you can't eat regular food.
  • Hugs, Mr. Shakes. So sorry you're feeling so lousy! We hope you're better really soon!

    --GoldFishy and The Captain
  • Ditto, ditto, ditto, ditto, ditto and...ditto!!
I hope you both get through this soon and can get back to the simple pleasures of life like jaw movement!!
    Hugs, but no kisses yet.
    Stay strong, both of you.
  • Oh, poor Mr. Shakes! Sending healing thoughts his way and hoping for better news soon.
  • Oooh not nice!
I have just had a toof out because of an abcess too, and had to wait a month in order for the dentist to operate.

Fortunately it was a loss of a filling that caused the abcess, so a friend, who happens to be a nurse, lanced it for me.

I used Clove Oil to ease the pain, dont know if that may help Iain?
(if used be careful, it will burn the tongue and lips!)

And I also used a weak antiseptic disinfectant solution as a mouth wash, one of the worst things I've ever tasted!

I really hope it gets better soon Iain.

Healing thoughts on their way ;)
  • Ack, poor guy! Hope he feels better soon!
  • Poor Ian! Lots of good advice here, and best wishes from everybody at my place for your feeling like a human bean soon.
  • Oy. Best wishes to him, and don't be shy about hauling his ass to the ER if you think he at all needs it. Good luck to you both.
  • Get well quick man.
  • yikes....and on top of everything, I am sorry you and Iain had trouble finding a doctor to take your insurance....I am finding more and more that it is not just *having* insurance, but having the *right* insurance that make getting treatment easier.

    Best wishes
  • Great to see the update! Keep getting well, Iain!
  • Wow, poor Iain! Hope the progress continues!
  • auch! get well soon, Mr. Shakes!
  • I'm glad to see that things are going better from that update!
  • I'm glad the new meds are working. Being sick sucks. All the good thoughts and feelings I can muster are heading your way.
  • If the infection is in his gums they need to clean out his gums with saltwater syringes. My aunt had terrible problems with that wich only stopped once the dentist did this a couple of times. They used to sell those syringes at the pharmacy but stopped because some people couldn't use them correctly. You might still be able to get them where you live.
  • Bless his heart! Some infections can be devilish-hard to get rid of. When people pine for the "good ol' days" I think about illnesses and infections that we can treat and cure now, that they couldn't in the past. Yay for modern medicine!
  • Ramen, BP. I remember my grandfather talking about going to the dentist when he was a kid; he would walk in the dentist's office and see the floor littered with extracted teeth, and he'd be afraid his own teeth would be lying there soon. Every time I'm tempted to complain about modern life, I remember that one.
  • Poor Mr. Shakes. Better late than never! I hope you feel better soon and are off the "fooking jello."
