Shakesville: This is really shaping up to be a "back-to-bed" day of the highest order.

I just love The Melissa. Congrats on the Femmobolshos Awards galore, richly deserved. And I hope this post gets xeroxed and stuck to every available surface everywhere.

This was before I was a regular here... on the one hand, even though I 'know' rape is more common than most like to admit, it still utterly disturbs me to see "Yes, it really does happen that often. Yes, that many people have been violated heinously; and yes, they usually get the blame, rather than the person doing the raping."

Needless to say, excellent post. Victim blaming is ludicrous in every sort of criminal situation - but it takes on a particular degree of vileness when its applied to rape victims.

that's just painful. thanks for writing it, though. we all need it. but lord, i wish all judges/cops/sundry victim blamers had their email and home addresses available to me. i'd just set up an RSS feed for all news stories on rape and have their inboxes jammed to overflowing daily.

Hear, hear! Someone linked to this post in the comments on my site (here) ... really glad I followed the link. :-)

"Quite literally, the only thing a person can do to avoid being raped is never be in the same room as a rapist. Since they don't announce themselves or wear signs or glow purple, that's not a very reasonable expectation, is it?"

Couldn't have said it better myself!

All I can say is "wow." Came across this on stumbleupon. I hope this post is read by many. I have met many people who blame the victims, as if they don't have enough on their plates already. Thank you for this.
