Shakesville: RIP Mollie Sugden

Sweet zmobie jeezus, WTF?!? I'm so sad to hear this, I love Are You Being Served! One of the funniest shows ever, and Mrs Slocombe reminds me so much of my maternal grandma. What a shite day.

    Aww, dammit. She was awesome.

    RIP, Mollie.

Oh, what sad news! I loved Are You Being Served, even if I only saw it in reruns. She was a delightful character, and I am most unanimous in this!

Oh, that's so sad! As LookADiversion said, she was awesome.

I am so sad to hear this. I grew up with Are You Being Served, and (product-of-its-times though it was), I shall miss Mrs Slocombe dearly. RIP Mollie.

I loved her, and I loved this show. Such sad news!

Rest in peace, Ms. Sugden, well-earned. You gave out laughs like candy.

    Oh crap. =(

    She was so brilliant.

Indeed, I had a sad when I saw this earlier - she was so awesome, and hi-fucking-larious.

AYBS was so great, and I will admit that I was immature enough to giggle incessantly at every 'pussy' joke - I think it was mostly the amazement at hearing it on TV! I certainly don't recall any American-made shows using the word even in its non-anatomical sense until very recently (and of course, they usually use it to mean wimpy...grr).

    RIP Mollie, we'll miss you!

Oh, this just breaks my heart! This show was my introduction to British comedy, I love it! My grandmother and I would watch this show and guess what color her hair was going to be. Sad day on this.

Oh no! I am so sad to hear this. I adored her.

She was fabulous! Several cast members have died in just the past couple of years (John Inman and Wendy Richard). I loved that silly show.

She's the only person I know that can make the "Pussy" joke funny. Just the delivery and the earnest makes me lose my shit every time.

I loved (still love) her as Mrs. Slocombe! Rest in peace, Mollie.

Rest in peace. I will watch more than Are You Being Served? to see more of her--loved watching that show with my mom and guffawing.

Mrs. Slocombe, and the show in general, was my introduction to double entrendres. Watching re-runs, one night I, like, totally got it. Ohhhhhhhh!

    Aww, sad. She rocked.

Seriously, though, it's definitely Celebrity Death Week. WTF?
  • liberalandproud · 5 months ago
Hope she and Karl Malden are enjoying a cocktail together in heaven.

I didn't want to like AYBS -- but all the characters were so much fun! I watch it as often as I can catch it. :) Oh, Mrs. Slocombe, that glorious hair! She left so much for us to enjoy!

The only thing that could have topped her career would have been a cameo in the team-dancing version of her show: You Have Been Served.

    R.I.P Mollie.
Indeed a National Treasure for us Brits, along with AYBS co-actor Wendy Richards (Miss Brahms) who died in February this year.

But, do you know Mrs Slocombe's first name?
  • ClumsyKisses · 5 months ago
There's a Little Britain sketch about her too.

Well, damn. As dated as "Are you Being Served?" was, I really liked it. I doubt the pussy jokes would have been funny coming from anyone else, but her delivery was perfect.

If laughter is the best medicine, then Mollie was a true HEALER. Only once in a lifetime does someone of her ability come along. Along with the rest of the cast of AYBS, she will live on forever, bring joy and laughter to a new generation of fans.
