I can't believe it's been two years since we last heard from Riverbend.

They aren't the only ones to have gone. I've missed Newt In A Teacup for a while now.

And some I enjoyed reading who are either MIA or who rarely grace the commentosphere these days:

    Chris Clarke
    Ilyka Damen
    Grumpy Old Man
    Donna Darko
    Betty Boondoggle
    Eurotrash
    LMYC

    I miss y'all!

The Homeless Gir archive is still around. Though it looks like it may be friends only.

Wasn't Homeless Girl outed as a fraud a few years back?
  • joycloete · 10 months ago
I think Homeless Girl is the first blog I had ever read. I miss having only a few blogs to read.

Does anyone know what happened to Riverbend? Her blog was the best and most personal I ever saw about what happened in Iraq. It ultimately led me here.
  • ginmar · 10 months ago
She was going to escape to Syria, last I heard. I'm not sure.
  • nwhiker · 10 months ago
Wow. I hadn't realised how long it had been since the last post at Riverbend. :(

I've looked everywhere for Salam Pax. I can't believe he's been hiding in plain sight. Thanks for the link!

No, Homeless Girl wasn't a fraud. There were lots of people hurling the accusation, but the real life person was Crystal Evans, and all the evidence I've seen says she's just who she says she was/is. Her last non-friend, publicly available posts indicated that she suffered some pretty serious post-surgical complications. I don't know where things went from there.

Yes, Riverbend and her family arrived in Syria. Her last post is about how odd it is to walk down a street without having to watch for explosions.

And re Grumpy Old Man: I really miss him too. I was going to include him in the list itself, except that he's a person, not a blog, so I didn't know how to put it. Come back, Grumpy!

Those who leave may come back. Someday.

I really miss The Happy Feminist.
  • Unree · 10 months ago
Memory lane! I pretty much gave up on Feministing after The Law Fairy stopped commenting a year or so ago (their crappy new interface doesn't help). I've pleaded here for the return of Betty Boondoggle. Miss GOM too--hope he's okay; he mentioned dealing with illness and financial straits. Thankfully, Donna Darko shows up now and then on Reclusive Leftist.

I have to hope Riverbend comes back and gives us news. I wonder if she knows how many people are thinking of her and her family.

Fafblog came back, unexpectedly, but it's not quite the same - I miss the green background and the exuberance.

riverbend's disappearance is fascinating to me; assuming (big assumption) all is well--why did she disappear? did she sicken of it all, grow weary of writing about iraq, want to start over as her non-net self?

her blog was turned into a book, at least a couple of plays, the BBC did a radio play of it, but once she hit syria, she just up and went away--gone, done--i hope she disappeared out of choice, and not fear of increasing visibility; she doesn't deserve to be haunted by her words.

"They've fallen silent, one by one. Good friends, people who cared enough to tell the truth and let us see some of their world. People who are kind, funny, brilliant. People I love. Where are they now?"

Yes, there are people who were online who I miss too. I think a large amount of them left places like livejournal, Facebook and Myspace because, indeed, because they cared enough to tell the truth and had ethics... and when those multinational corporations recently began placing reeeeeeeally bad advertisements on their website it was not something they could stomach.

Crystal Evans had a livejournal account and I have had a livejournal account for a while but then LJ was bought out for one million dollars and everyone knew what would happen next (even though they promised there would be no ads)... forced advertisements.

It got to the point that the very companies we speak out against were being advertised on our blogs... especially when google adwords was used.

If there silence was not against their will, I am sad about it. But if they chose to remain silent rather than have a blog that promoted multinational corporate product advertisements, I am proud of them for that decision.

    Love for the people,
    -T

    :)
