My youngest brother is autistic and it used to pain me when my grandpa would make comments like "he just didn't know discipline" and suchlike that implied if only he would just behave and listen he could stop being autistic. But I forgave my grandpa because autism is a poorly understood diseased and he's my grandpa and I love him.

How you handle your mistakes is completely up to you. So far you're handling it by saying "fine, if I post here I will follow the rules, even though they are SO ZOMG STUPIT and you bitchez are SO ZOMG HYPERSENSITIVE" instead of "oh yeah, maybe I want to do my best not to participate in an oppressive structure because I'm not a complete asshole". Michael Savage may have bitten off more than he can chew, as autism is a condition that is spanning race, gender, and class. I know of a former Microsoft exec -- and extremely wealthy because of it -- who basically fronted a whole bunch of money into an autism research program.

It would be interesting to point the members of Defeat Autism Now to Savage's repulsive screed and see what happens...

Northcoase, I understand you mean well, but using cancer as a comparison is just about the most offensive thing you could have written. Opposition to person-first language has been an central part of autistic culture and activism for well over 10 years, and with good reason: “person with autism” separates autism from the person, and while that is a good thing where cancer is concerned, the only currently reliable method of separating a person from their autism is by killing them (which happens fairly regularly).

As you say, labels and what they imply are powerful; what autistic people want and need is to be accepted and supported as autistic people, not as idealized versions of personhood dragging their individual burdens of autism along behind them. I'm sure you can find many examples of people who disagree, but then it it is hardly unusual for people to internalize the negative attitudes and terminology of an overwhelmingly ablist society.

If you take the time to search around on this issue, you'll find that autistic self-advocates, while not always being terribly well organized or visible, have been pretty much strong and unanimous on this since the early 90s. It's really down to you, however, whether you choose to respect their wishes or not.

I realized who Michael Savage reminds me of: the satirical, fictitious Ed Anger, editorialist for the late, lamented Weekly World News, who made over-the top suggestions like ending child molestation by arming our nation's children (except of course that Savage means it).

If I were God, I would have created Michael Savage as an example of Life Satirizes Art, perhaps by the old Road to Damascus trick: "Michael Weiner, be thou renamed. Take health foods and Allen Ginsberg out of thy mouth, and henceforth be MICHAEL SAVAGE."

dgun, just to chime in. Your comment "you don't make the rules" is true, but you have to think of who DOES make the rules. That would be misogynistic douches like M. Savage, or the community and culture of douches we call the patriarchy (it does exist, we all live in it and with it, sadly).

This blog is a tough crowd because we don't follow those rules, we challenge them, and we challenge people who barge in here carrying a lot of unquestioned assumptions. Pussy is not an acceptable insult in this community, it should not be acceptable anywhere, at least until feminism wins and the connotation of pussy is "totally kick-ass fun normal woman enjoying her post-patriarchy freedom". Which makes it not an insult anymore, right?
