Shakesville: Don’t Just Blame the Victim; Prosecute Her

This happened to me in a town in which a woman was charged twenty years ago of the same offense and committed suicide after the story, with her name, was printed in the paper. I was treated as guilty even by friends and the lawyers I hired to represent me. Fortunately, I am a bad ass who doesn't take shit from anyone and after firing 3 lawyers I found one who respected me enough to get the charges dropped. He didn't tell me everything and did not advise me to press charges against the police for sexual assault and other faults or against the crown who could arguably be guilty of malicious prosecution, so the end result is very dissatisfying. I think the point is to exhaust women to the point where they are just thankful for silence. Just being left alone is supposed to seem like enough of a win, so we won't want to expend energy actually fighting for our rights.

This story fills me with sorrow. I can't even comment rationally right now because I am overwhelmed with emotion. Liss, your comments hit the mark. Thanks for sharing. For now, I am going to bookmark this blog, because I really want to write more about this when my brain is functioning on a healthier level.

and we are telling our daughters to report rape...No means No...and then we have this that takes the wind from the promise of Justice will be done? This disgusts me.
