I am sure Hucks would do the same thing if he were in such a circumstance.

To me, that just shows that Huck has seen The Assasination of Jesse James, which demonstrates Huck's good taste. But then Huck has to make a joke like this (ick) which demonstrates Huck's bad taste. So I guess that all in all it's a wash.

For what it's worth Michael, I think it was a lynching reference too. If nothing else because he said "tripped off" rather than "fell out of" or jumped out of", the wording was bizarre to say the least. At first I was thinking "Obama's tall, why would he be standing on a chair?, followed by "nah, he couldn't have meant that, could he...?" And also, there was a pause between the chair part and the gun part, I almost wonder if he didn't add the second to cover the first. The whole damn thing is just sickening. and the fact that everybody dismissed as his folksy humor is infuriating.

I'm really at a loss how to deal with this without discussing it, though, but I hope I'm not adding fuel. The point that we all agree on, I think, is that Huckabee made a very unfunny reference, and should not be let off the hook for it.

No, Michael, I am just saying that Huckabee has a lot of flaws and in the context of a speech at a NRA convention the shoot in the face is as significant as the tripped off a chair. I have no need to visualize as I am acutely aware that this is the tip of the iceberg for what is coming in the next six months.

Hawise, you're taking this as an off-the-cuff "joke" which it wasn't. You really need to form a mental picture of a man standing on a chair with a rope around his neck (not mentioned) and a gun pointed at him in order to get the whole scenario. You have to visualize the lynching to see what those words "tripped off a chair" mean.

Michael- If you read the whole thing he was describing both and, as he has a history of aiming guns at reporters in a 'friendly, jocular manner', the gun issue is foremost on the mind of those who follow the Huckster. It was also said at a NRA convention and they know that the gun safety issue is one of the main attacks against them in the political arena.

I find this particularly disturbing because it's Obama. He's a historical candidate, whose historicity is going to piss of people, specifically the sorts of people who would attempt an assassination. This is not something to joke about. Is Huck really so far up the ass of privilege that he can't imagine why this is a legitimate issue?

I don't think people are really seeing the picture here. If you understand that Huckabee is not describing a SHOOTING, he is describing a LYNCHING, it makes more sense. "Tripped off a chair" -- why was he standing on a chair? That is a clear dog whistle for a hanging.

It's about what I expect from people like Huckabee. I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised by the audience reaction. The initial laughter is fairly large about a pratfall of falling off a chair; the very few nervous titters at the gun pointing part seem, to me, to show the NRA crowd is as appalled as we are at the comment.

Google News has 304+ news articles found about Huck's "joke." Now if we can get that kind of coverage for when McCain spouts b.s.....

Oh, yeah DG. I just played that clip and the nervous laughter...oh JEEZ did he bomb. That was the sound a joke makes right before the comedian has to go into his 'recovery' routine. I would guess NRA people take gun safety a bit more seriously than Huckleberry.

I hate it when anyone, even liberals, say "I wish ____would die a slow death," or such. To make jokes about a potential killing piss me off to no end. I tell a lot of "mean-spirited" sarcastic jokes, but I NEVER make jokes about someone dying.
